Poker is becoming more and more of a fixture in Australian culture. Popular trivia nights are being swept aside to make way for the poker craze.
Maybe it is the strong presence of poker in Hollywood. Maybe Ausy Joe Hachem, the 2005 World Series champion and winner of over $10 million Austrailian dollars, has been the inspiration. Whatever the case hopefuls are flocking to pubs and clubs at record rates to try their luck at local tournaments.
The National Poker League (NPL) has more than doubled the number of participating pubs in the past four weeks, which now number 75, up from 35. Playing for money is, however, still illegal down under. Participants play for points and prizes but mostly for the experience.
The NPL's Richard O'Neill credits the US market for influencing this latest craze. "It's humungous in the United States," he said. "It's the biggest craze over there and it has been for the past two years."

Derek Kelly claims poker is a skill game that gives every player an equal opportunity to win. While many agree with the 46-year-old club owner from central London, he will have a tough task defending his claim in the British courts.
Kelly has been accused of contravening the Gaming Act which says a licence is needed to host games of chance but not games of skill, like chess and quiz machines.
"Poker is a game of equal opportunity. If I sat down to play with you (Det Insp Darren Warner) nothing would detract from who is the best player other than skill.
"If you do not believe that, I could produce volumes to show you that the best players in the world continue to win competitions," Kelly told police.
The trial was adjourned until Friday.

After Joseph Hachem won the WSOP this year, Sky City Adelaide has opened a new poker room (the old one closed down in 2001 for lack of interest). Games will run Wednesday to Saturday with Holdem, Omaha, and Manila (which is some sort of bizzare Australian holdem game with a 36 card deck where you must both your holecards).
The poker boom is only just beginning folks, wait till the Chinese get into it.

Ben Affleck has apparantly significantly cut back on his poker playing now that he and his new wife (Jennifer Garner, for those of you not up on the Hollywood gossip) are preparing for the arrival of their first child.
Annie Duke (Ben's poker coach) says he "hasn't played all that much since he got involved with Jennifer. I think his mind is on other things."
For that statement, Annie Duke wins this week's "Water-is-Wet Award for stating the blindingly obvious". Whose mind wouldn't be on other things if they married Jennifer Garner?

Wednesday August 31st, there's a $125 buyin "Ladies Poker Party" satelite tournament ($15 goes to breast cancer research and the winner goes to the invitation only WPT Ladies Night III main event. Several celebrities, including WSOP bracelet winner Jennifer Tilly, have signed up.
The main event is Thursday 1st September, with the winner getting a seat in the $25,500 WPT Championship, a pink ribbon poker set, and a $10,000 donation in her name to Breast Cancer Research.
It's ladies only, which is a shame, because Isabelle Mercier (the defnending champion, and one of my favourite players ever) is going to be there. The event will be on TV October 22nd (in the US) so all is not lost.
